Bobby G. Waters - director, playwright, producer, actor, song writer and musician

From an early age it was clear that Bobby Waters had something to share, and he felt the entire world needed to experience it.  In his early education, often times his teachers would comment first on his intelligence but more times than not, the conversation would turn to his constant need to talk to everyone in the class during inappropriate times such as teaching moments. Born to the loving parents of Dennis and Hattie Waters, he was protected, nurtured, guided and brought up in the fear and admonition of the Lord.  As the son of a minister, during his adolescent years he struggled with the constant pressures of “perfection” that are placed on ministers and their families.  He just wanted to be himself.  Bobby found solace in The Arts.  His first love was music.  Captured by the melodies and sweet rhythms he would lose himself in a good record.  Although most of the music played by his parents was gospel, as he got older it was not uncommon for him to sneak away in his room or in the car parked in the driveway to listen to old school grooves; the likes of Marvin Gaye, Pattie LaBelle, Teddy P., Dianna Ross and Luther Vandross to name a few.  He may have been too young to know what good love was all about, but he sure knew what good music was and he loved it.

His love of the music led to him playing the piano.  These studies were very brief and inconsistent.  Due to the employment of his father, Bobby’s adolescent years were filled with change.  He never stayed in one state longer than (4) years, moving a total of seven times in fourteen years, yet this could not kill the passion that he had for music.  Bobby would often times sit at the piano and teach himself by ear the various religious songs that he was so familiar with.  From as far back as he can remember, Bobby recalls being forced (by his mom) to stand up in front of the church with his brother and sister and sing numerous times.  As a good songstress herself, his mother would ensure that they knew the words to the songs and were prepared before she put them on “the spot.”  Through this

constant prompting and the no nonsense attitude of his mother, his once dreaded thoughts of singing in front of people became second nature.  Bobby continued singing in various church choirs and groups and eventually fell under the tutelage of Dr. Lloyd Mallory Jr. when he sang with the critically acclaimed Oakwood College Aeolians, in Huntsville AL.  After two years Bobby returned to Maryland, the place he now called home.  It was at this time that his theatrical talents came alive.

Upon returning from college, his parents (mainly his mother) suggested that he use his love for the arts in the church.  “You know we have a need for a drama coordinator” she said.  After little resistance, he agreed.  Bobby began to use his theatrical artistic abilities to convert Christian concepts, morals and ideals into various skits and sketches.  At that time, these skits were simply for those who were involved with or attending church.  Shortly thereafter he came to the realization that these messages of hope, comfort and victory were not just for “church-goers”, but that they were beneficial to all mankind.   As time went on he found himself writing works geared toward society as a whole; in attempts to encourage, edify and inspire them to want more, do more and be more, individually and collectively as a people; as a community. Out of this, Deep Waters Productions was born.

Bobby is also passionate about the adolescent males in our society and devotes countless hours and attention providing positive guidance and encouragement in attempts to put them on the path to success at an early age.  Knowing that many young men have not been afforded the opportunity to model healthy male role models, he has began developing a mentoring program for young males.

Using the circumstances and situations of his life to draw from, when writing, Bobby  illustrates that every stop along the road of life presents us with the opportunity to meet people from all walks of life.  One can not argue that the highs and lows, the tragedies and comedies and life lessons can be witnessed in all of his productions.

Bobby owes the ability to remain grounded to his family.  From his wife, immediate family and those closest to him, he has a strong supporting cast of individuals whom he can depend on.  He considers himself blessed to be in the situation that he is in.  When asked if he could be one person in the world who would it be?  He simply smiles and answered ...ME!  He is married to the lovely Shelli-Ann Waters and they are the proud parents of two boys, Bobby II (2yrs) and Shaun Alexander (4 months).  He is thankful that he had a good teacher in the area of fatherhood and takes pride in raising his sons, just as his father had raised him.

Bobby often says that he "sees himself as an ordinary guy with a simple message that has extraordinary potential and possibilities."  He knows from experience that if one can see it, they can achieve it!  He often refers to his father as the smartest man he knows and quotes him saying, "Faith is a vision borrowed from tomorrow, that gives meaning and purpose to today."  He hopes that by his works, others will be able to catch a glimpse of their tomorrow, realizing that their current circumstances do not define who they are, nor does it determine who they will be!
